Bye-elections: Don't vote for Labour Party - Peter Obi tells supporters

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi urged the new Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, to ensure a fair and credible governorship election in Anambra State on Saturday. Speaking to journalists after attending a campaign rally for Labour Party candidate Dr. George Moghalu in Nnewi, Obi stressed the importance of upholding the credibility of the electoral process, reminding the INEC chairman that his actions will have a lasting impact on his legacy and his family’s future. He called for a free, fair, and credible election in which the will of the people is respected.

Obi also addressed speculation about his political future, confirming his intention to run in the 2027 presidential election and reaffirming his membership in the Labour Party. He clarified that his involvement in the ADC coalition was limited to the 2023 presidential election and that he remains committed to the Labour Party.

Expressing concern about the tone of the campaign, Obi urged candidates to focus on issues rather than resort to personal attacks and foul language. He emphasized the need for respectful dialogue and encouraged voters to assess candidates based on their policies and convictions.

The Anambra State governorship election is a significant event on Nigeria’s political calendar, with several candidates vying for the top position. Observers and stakeholders will closely watch the election to assess the credibility and transparency of the process. As the new INEC chairman, Professor Amupitan’s leadership will be under scrutiny, and his ability to deliver a free and fair election will be a key test of his tenure.

With the election just days away, the people of Anambra State are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights and choose their next leader. The outcome will have significant implications for the state and the country as a whole, and all eyes will be on INEC to ensure that the process is fair, credible, and reflective of the will of the people.
