The Imo State Police Command has denied allegations that a suspected terrorist, Magnus Ejiogu, was tortured or maltreated while in custody and subsequently died. DSP Henry Okoye, the command’s spokesperson, described the circulating social‑media reports as “false, unfounded, and deliberately aimed at maligning the image of the Nigeria Police Force.”
Ejiogu, also known as Emu, was a 49‑year‑old native of Obudi Agwa in Oguta Local Government Area. He was alleged to be a key sponsor and financier of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN), and was linked to several deadly attacks, including the assassination of a traditional ruler and an assault on a police station that killed five officers.
An investigation into his case was completed, and the report was approved for prosecution on 20 October 2025. However, his arraignment was postponed because of an ongoing judiciary strike. While awaiting arraignment, Ejiogu fell ill on 23 October 2025, was taken to a police clinic, and then referred to a teaching hospital for further care. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead by a practitioner; his body was placed in the hospital mortuary for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The police command maintains that Ejiogu was not subjected to torture or maltreatment during his detention and that all procedures adhered to professional policing ethics and due process. The Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation into the cause of death, to be conducted by the Homicide Section of the state Criminal Investigation Department.
The Imo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to justice, professionalism, and accountability, urging the public not to spread unverified reports that could erode confidence in law enforcement. As the investigation proceeds, the command emphasizes its focus on uncovering the truth and ensuring that justice is served, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in handling sensitive, high‑profile cases.
