The Imo State Police Command has refuted allegations of torture and maltreatment of a suspected terrorist, Magnus Ejiogu, who died in custody. According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, the reports circulating on social media are “false, unfounded, and deliberately aimed at maligning the image of the Nigeria Police Force.”
Ejiogu, also known as Emu, was a 49-year-old native of Obudi Agwa in Oguta Local Government Area, allegedly identified as a key sponsor and financier of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN). He was reportedly linked to several deadly attacks, including the assassination of a traditional ruler and an attack on a police station that resulted in the deaths of five police officers.
An investigation into Ejiogu’s case had been completed, and the report was approved for prosecution on October 20, 2025. However, his arraignment was delayed due to an ongoing strike by members of the judiciary. While awaiting arraignment, Ejiogu fell ill on October 23, 2025, and was rushed to a police clinic before being referred to a teaching hospital for further medical attention. Despite efforts to save him, he was confirmed dead by a medical practitioner, and his body has been deposited in the hospital mortuary for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The police command maintains that Ejiogu was not subjected to torture or maltreatment during his custody and that all actions taken were in line with professional policing ethics and due process. The Commissioner of Police has directed an investigation into the cause of Ejiogu’s death, which will be conducted by the Homicide Section of the state Criminal Investigation Department.
The Imo State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to upholding justice, professionalism, and accountability in the discharge of its duties. The command has also cautioned against spreading unverified reports that could undermine public confidence in law enforcement. As the investigation into Ejiogu’s death continues, the command remains focused on ensuring that the truth is revealed and that justice is served. The incident highlights the need for transparency and accountability in law enforcement, particularly in cases involving sensitive and high-profile suspects.
