I’ve been repeatedly denied movie roles due to my body size - Emeka Okoye

Nigerian actor Emeka Okoye recently opened up about the challenges he faces in the film industry because of his body size. In an interview with Seun Oloketuyi on Nollywood On Radio, Okoye explained that producers have repeatedly denied him roles, labeling him either too slim or too fat for certain characters. This pattern of rejection has been a constant in his career, with his physical appearance frequently cited as the reason for not being cast.

Okoye recounted specific instances where he was told he was too fat to fit a role, as well as earlier experiences of being rejected for being too slim. Even when he was younger and slimmer, he struggled to secure parts, often being used merely as a stand‑in for other actors during auditions. He noted that his body size has led to typecasting, with producers typically offering him roles such as landlords, husbands or uncles.

The actor expressed frustration that he is no longer considered for “bad boy” roles, as producers assume his current physique prevents him from interpreting such characters. However, Okoye hinted that his upcoming movies will showcase his versatility and challenge these assumptions.

Okoye’s experience highlights a broader issue in the Nigerian film industry, where physical appearance can heavily influence casting decisions. His comments underscore the need for greater diversity and inclusivity, allowing actors of all shapes and sizes to be considered for a wide range of roles. As Nollywood continues to grow and evolve, it remains to be seen how producers will respond to Okoye’s concerns and work toward creating more opportunities for actors of varied backgrounds and physical characteristics.
