Trump must get approval from Tinubu before US military action - Presidency

Nigeria’s presidential aide, Daniel Bwala, warned that any United States military operation in Nigeria without the country’s consent would be diplomatically unacceptable. In an interview with the BBC World Service, he emphasized Nigeria’s sovereignty and insisted that foreign involvement in internal security must be collaborative and respect the nation’s territorial integrity.

Bwala’s comments follow U.S. President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged persecution of Christians, along with his threat to deploy U.S. military resources against terrorist groups targeting Christians in the country. While Bwala said a joint operation with Nigeria would be acceptable, a unilateral invasion would be inappropriate, especially given Nigeria’s strategic partnership in combating insecurity.

He noted that unilateral intervention is usually reserved for cases where a government is complicit in a crisis—a situation he asserted does not apply to Nigeria. The special adviser’s remarks underscore the importance of diplomatic cooperation and respect for sovereignty when addressing security concerns.

As Nigeria navigates its complex security landscape, its stance on international cooperation and territorial integrity remains a central element of foreign policy. The U.S. designation and threat of military action have raised concerns about potential foreign intervention in Nigeria’s internal affairs. Bwala’s statements serve as a reminder that collaboration and respect for national sovereignty are essential in tackling security challenges. Moving forward, diplomatic channels and international partnerships are likely to play a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s response, as the government balances relationships with global partners while maintaining its commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity.
