The Taraba State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied reports that it imposed conditions on Governor Agbu Kefas before his planned defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). According to the APC State spokesperson, Aaron Atmas, the governor’s decision to join the party was entirely voluntary and unconditional.
At a press briefing in Jalingo on Wednesday, Atmas stated that the APC has not made any demands on Governor Kefas, who is expected to join the party in the coming weeks. The spokesperson emphasized that the governor’s move is aimed at fostering unity among political stakeholders and driving development in Taraba State. “The major thing he is calling for is unity so that, with one voice, we can move Taraba State forward,” Atmas explained.
The governor’s recent meetings with key APC members were described as an effort to clear misconceptions and rumors surrounding his defection. Atmas revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has handed Governor Kefas over to the APC’s national chairman, paving the way for his formal entry into the party. An official ceremony to welcome the governor into the APC is expected to take place soon.
Atmas also claimed that there is currently no active opposition in the state, as major APC stakeholders have endorsed the governor’s entry. He noted that the governor has a proven track record of working with people from different backgrounds and has promised to harmonize the politics of the state. “We are going to continue in a democratic manner,” Atmas said.
The development is seen as a significant move in Taraba State’s political landscape, with potential implications for the state’s development and governance. With the governor’s expected defection, the APC is poised to consolidate its position in the state. The official ceremony to welcome Governor Kefas into the APC is anticipated to take place in the coming weeks, marking a new chapter in the state’s political history.
