APC slams Gov’s Kefas speech, demands action on deputy Gov's prolonged absence

Chief David Sani Kente, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State, has categorically denied rumors that he is trying to persuade Governor Agbu Kefas of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to defect to the APC. Kente, who was the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) gubernatorial candidate in Taraba in 2015, called the claims baseless and harmful to his reputation. In a recent interview he clarified that he has had no discussions with Governor Kefas about any possible defection, and that the governor has not approached him or any other key APC figures in Southern Taraba about joining the party.

Kente expressed disappointment that such a significant political decision could be contemplated without consultation, especially given his and other local leaders’ role in establishing the APC in the region in 2016. He noted that the rumors have strained his relationships within the APC, with some members accusing him of secretly negotiating the governor’s defection. These allegations, he said, have further damaged his political standing and the programs he supports within the party.

Emphasizing traditional Jukun values—shared by both himself and Governor Kefas—Kente stressed the importance of respect and consultation on matters of this nature. He hinted that the evolving political landscape might force him to reconsider his previous vow not to run against Governor Kefas, citing the changing dynamics in the state’s political arena.

Reflecting on his past political efforts, Kente recalled his collaboration with Senator Joel Danlami Ikenya in establishing the APC in Southern Taraba. He reiterated that any decisions regarding the governor’s potential defection are being made without the knowledge or involvement of key APC stakeholders in the region. Kente urged party members to disregard speculation and stop attributing the rumored defection plans to him, insisting that if Governor Kefas is indeed considering joining the APC, it is without his or other local leaders’ participation.

The denial comes amid a complex political backdrop in Taraba State, where alliances and defections can significantly shift the balance of power. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders and the public await clarity on the governor’s intentions and the potential implications for the state’s political landscape.
