The Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Anambra State, George Moghalu, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to utilize the upcoming election as an opportunity to restore its reputation. In an interview on Channels Television, Moghalu emphasized the importance of INEC conducting a free, fair, and credible election.
The Anambra State governorship election, scheduled for November 8, will see incumbent governor Charles Soludo seeking re-election. A total of 16 political parties, including the Labour Party, have been cleared by INEC to participate in the poll. Moghalu expressed his expectation that INEC will deliver a credible election, stating that it is the commission’s responsibility to do what is right and restore the confidence of the people in the electoral process.
Moghalu also addressed concerns about potential disruptions to the election, citing the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). He emphasized that these groups do not have the capacity to truncate the election and appealed to security operatives to maintain professionalism and provide a secure environment for voters.
The candidate’s comments come as the electoral commission prepares to conduct the off-cycle governorship poll. The election is significant, as it will determine the next governor of Anambra State. With multiple political parties participating, the election is expected to be closely contested. Moghalu’s call for INEC to redeem its image highlights the importance of a credible electoral process in maintaining public trust.
As the election approaches, security agencies are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for voters. Moghalu’s appeal for professionalism and a secure environment underscores the need for collaboration between electoral authorities, security agencies, and stakeholders to guarantee a successful election. The outcome of the election will be closely watched, both within Nigeria and internationally, as it will have significant implications for the state’s governance and development.
