Anambra Guber: Obidient Movement backs Labour Party’s Moghalu

The Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Anambra State, George Moghalu, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to use the upcoming election as an opportunity to restore its reputation. In an interview with Channels Television, Moghalu stressed that INEC must conduct a free, fair and credible election. The Anambra State governorship poll, scheduled for 8 November, will see incumbent Governor Charles Soludo seeking re‑election, with 16 political parties—including the Labour Party—cleared by INC to participate.

Moghalu expressed confidence that INEC will deliver a credible election, noting that it is the commission’s responsibility to do what is right and to rebuild public confidence in the electoral process. He also addressed concerns about possible disruptions, citing the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). Moghalu argued that these groups lack the capacity to truncate the election and appealed to security operatives to maintain professionalism and provide a secure environment for voters.

His comments come as the electoral commission prepares to conduct the off‑cycle governorship poll, an election that will determine the next governor of Anambra State. With multiple parties contesting, the race is expected to be closely fought. Moghalu’s call for INEC to redeem its image underscores the importance of a credible electoral process in maintaining public trust. As the election approaches, security agencies are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for voters. His appeal for professionalism and collaboration among electoral authorities, security agencies and stakeholders highlights the need for a successful, trustworthy election, the outcome of which will be closely watched both within Nigeria and internationally for its implications on the state’s governance and development.
