Taraba: Forum backs Gov Kefas’s anticipated defection to APC

The Taraba State government has taken a significant step toward advancing its sugar development initiatives by establishing a 23‑member Joint Technical Committee. Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas approved the committee, which is tasked with promoting the growth of the sugar industry across the state. Chaired by Jethro Yakubu Zikyengyu, the committee includes representatives from key government agencies, the private sector, farmers’ associations, community leaders, and traditional rulers, with Abel Bako Joachim from the Ministry of Agriculture serving as Secretary.

The committee’s mandate covers the formulation of a comprehensive sugar development plan, the identification of suitable locations for sugar processing, and the mobilization of funding, equipment, and technical expertise to enhance production. Coordination of the committee’s activities will be handled by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Jeji Williams, and the group has a three‑month timeline to submit its report and recommendations to the state government.

Governor Kefas emphasized that this move reflects his administration’s commitment to agricultural transformation, job creation, and industrial growth throughout Taraba State. With its rich agricultural resources, the state is well‑positioned to become a major player in the sugar industry. The committee will focus on engaging stakeholders—including farmers, processors, and investors—to create a conducive environment for sugar production and processing.

The administration has prioritized agricultural development as a key driver of economic growth and employment. The sugar sector is viewed as critical to the state’s economy, and the committee’s recommendations are expected to outline a roadmap for establishing processing facilities, irrigation systems, and other essential infrastructure. This initiative aims to generate jobs and income opportunities for farmers, processors, and other stakeholders, thereby boosting the state’s overall economy.

As the committee begins its work, the government is confident that a thriving sugar industry will play a significant role in driving economic growth and development in Taraba State.
