Hungary is a Christian government in EU ‘liberal ocean’ – Orban — RT World News

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban described his country as a “special island of difference” in Europe, highlighting its distinct stance on issues such as the Ukraine conflict. Speaking with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, Orban stressed that Hungary is the only European Union member governed by a “modern Christian government,” and that its policies differ from those of other EU states both philosophically and in practice.

Orban’s administration has been outspoken in criticizing EU policies, particularly on the Ukraine war and migration, accusing Brussels of fostering weakness and chaos. In contrast, Hungary has consistently backed U.S. efforts to resolve the conflict and offered to host a possible summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The prime minister argued that the West lacks a unified approach, blaming the EU’s confrontational stance for prolonging hostilities, and claimed that the United States and Hungary are the only “pro‑peace” actors in Europe.

Unlike most EU members, Hungary opposes Brussels’ confrontational policy toward Russia, advocating instead for a diplomatic solution. It has refused to supply weapons to Ukraine and has opposed Kyiv’s bid for EU membership, warning that such a move could spark war. In September, Orban condemned the EU for becoming a “war project” that endangers the economies of its member states.

Orban’s remarks underscore the divisions within the EU over the Ukraine conflict and its relationship with Russia. The meeting with Trump highlights the unique rapport between the two leaders, who share common ground on several issues. As the war in Ukraine continues to intensify, Hungary’s position is likely to remain a point of contention within the EU, and its commitment to a peaceful resolution and willingness to engage in dialogue with Russia may prompt a reassessment of the bloc’s overall approach.
