Former Cross River State Governor, Professor Ben Ayade, has expressed disappointment with the All Progressives Congress (APC) for not recognizing his contributions to the party’s success in the South-South region. Ayade, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in 2021, stated that he made significant sacrifices to align his state with the ruling party, despite the political risks involved.
In a recent media interview, Ayade revealed that he bears the scars of the battle to bring Cross River into the APC fold, which have yet to heal. He attributed his decision to join the APC to his ability to foresee the party’s potential for growth and dominance in the country. Ayade claimed that his move was a strategic decision to position Cross River for relevance and federal attention, rather than an impulsive one.
The former governor noted that he was one of the first to publicly endorse Senator Bola Tinubu as the presidential candidate, long before the party’s primaries. He also devoted his time and energy to Tinubu’s campaign during the 2023 general elections, often prioritizing the presidential candidate’s interests over his own. Ayade expressed his disappointment that his loyalty and contributions to the party have not been adequately acknowledged, stating that the APC has not treated him fairly.
Despite this, Ayade remains hopeful that President Tinubu will recognize the efforts of those who stood by him during his campaign. He expressed his faith in the president’s ability to lead the country, describing him as a smart leader who values loyalty. Ayade believes that President Tinubu will surprise the nation with his leadership, acknowledging those who supported him when it mattered.
The former governor’s comments come as the APC continues to consolidate its power in the South-South region. Ayade’s defection to the APC in 2021 was seen as a significant move, as it marked one of the first times a governor from the region had joined the ruling party. His endorsement of President Tinubu and his contributions to the campaign were also notable, given the political landscape of the region at the time. As the APC looks to build on its success in the South-South, Ayade’s comments highlight the need for the party to recognize and reward the loyalty of its members.
