Thousands of residents in Ibadan, Oyo State, are protesting the state government’s alleged plan to acquire additional land for the Ibadan circular road corridor. Demonstrators have blocked major thoroughfares, including Iwo Road, causing significant traffic congestion.
The idea of the Ibadan circular road was first introduced when Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, now the Olubadan of Ibadanland, served as governor. At that time, the road was to be confined to a 150‑meter width. However, the current governor, Seyi Makinde, is reportedly seeking to extend the corridor, a move that would affect more houses and community lands.
Residents from Ido, Lagelu, Ona Ara, Akinyele, Oluyole, and Egbeda are demanding that the state government adhere to the original 150‑meter limit. Armed with placards, the protesters have gathered on Iwo Road and at the entrance of the Agodi government secretariat, disrupting traffic flow and access to the area.
While the circular road project aims to improve Ibadan’s transportation infrastructure, locals fear displacement of families and businesses and the loss of community land. The protest underscores the need for the state government to engage with the community, address their concerns, and provide clarity on the project’s plans and implications. As the situation unfolds, officials are expected to respond to the demonstrators’ demands, highlighting the importance of transparent and inclusive urban planning that balances development with the rights and needs of affected communities.
