The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State is grappling with internal turmoil after allegations emerged that some members are secretly attempting to overturn the results of the recently concluded governorship primary. The primary, described by participants as transparent and peaceful, produced Dr. Wole Oluyede as the party’s flag‑bearer. However, reports that certain individuals are working to alter the outcome have raised fears of destabilisation and could undermine the party’s prospects in the upcoming election.
Hon. Deji Ogunsakin, a prominent PDP chieftain, affirmed that the primaries were conducted credibly by the people of Ekiti, but warned that any attempt to tamper with the result could jeopardise the party’s chances. He stressed that the electorate had clearly chosen Dr. Oluyede and that no amount of interference could change that decision.
Other senior figures have echoed these concerns. Former Ekiti PDP Chairman Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe called on party leaders to protect the integrity of the primary, while former House of Representatives member Hon. Segun Adekola reiterated that the people’s choice must be respected. The emergence of Oluyede as the PDP candidate is being hailed by some members as a significant development that could better position the party to reclaim power in next year’s governorship election.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state appears unsettled by Oluyede’s candidacy, with some APC members predicting a PDP victory. The controversy over alleged manipulation has revived old divisions within the Ekiti PDP chapter, prompting elders and stakeholders to urge the national leadership to intervene and prevent another internal crisis. The primary was held under tight security and supervision, and party members have described the process as both transparent and peaceful. How the national leadership responds will be crucial to the PDP’s chances in the forthcoming election.
