Rigging worst coup - Dickson, Amaechi warn ahead of 2027

Nigeria’s democracy faces serious threats from electoral fraud, voter apathy, and political manipulation as the 2027 general elections draw near, warned former governors of Bayelsa and Rivers states, Senator Seriake Dickson and Rotimi Amaechi. They voiced their concerns at the fifth‑anniversary lecture of First Daily Newspaper in Abuja, which was themed “2027: How Can We Make Our Votes Count?” Senator Dickson, who chaired the event, described election rigging as a major danger to the country’s democratic system. He stressed that when government officials, security agencies, and electoral authorities collude to manipulate results, they undermine the sovereignty of the people. Dickson called on the National Assembly to strengthen electoral laws to prevent such violations and to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.

Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation, added that electoral reforms in Nigeria have consistently failed because incumbent governments lack political will. He attributed this failure to entrenched political interests and weak opposition parties, which have allowed the manipulation of the electoral system. Amaechi warned that growing voter apathy is worsening the problem, making it easier for fraud to occur.

Dr. Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the need for neutrality in election management. He noted that the close ties between those who run elections and those in power have turned elections into contests of influence rather than genuine reflections of the people’s will.

The concerns raised by these leaders highlight the crucial importance of electoral integrity for the legitimacy of Nigeria’s democratic process. As the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections, robust electoral reforms and measures to curb voter apathy are becoming increasingly urgent. The National Assembly’s response will be pivotal in addressing the challenges facing Nigeria’s electoral system and upholding democratic principles.
