Tinubu’s Move to Free Ekweremadu Politically Motivated

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent move to secure the release of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu from a UK prison has been questioned by social critic and activist Mahdi Shehu. According to Shehu, the president’s decision to set up a high-powered committee to engage the UK government over Ekweremadu’s imprisonment may be driven by political strategy rather than compassion.

Ekweremadu has been in prison since his conviction in 2023 for organ trafficking. Shehu noted that the president’s decision came despite Nigeria currently lacking a substantive ambassador to the UK, who could have handled the matter more effectively through regular diplomatic channels. The UK justice system is known for being robust, and Shehu believes that the opportunity to resolve the Ekweremadu issue was lost long ago.

The only realistic option left for Nigeria, according to Shehu, is to explore a prisoner transfer agreement if such a treaty exists and has been executed between both countries. Shehu’s comments suggest that Tinubu’s action may be a calculated move, particularly with the 2027 general elections approaching. Ekweremadu, as a prominent figure from the southeastern region of Nigeria, may hold significant political value.

Shehu pointed out that other Nigerians convicted or detained in prisons worldwide are unlikely to receive the same level of attention as Ekweremadu, as they may not hold the same political significance for the president. The development has sparked interest in the motivations behind Tinubu’s decision, with some questioning whether it is a genuine attempt to assist a Nigerian citizen or a strategic move to garner support ahead of the elections.

The Nigerian government’s efforts to secure Ekweremadu’s release will be closely watched, particularly in light of the country’s diplomatic relations with the UK. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Tinubu’s move will yield the desired outcome and what implications it may have for the upcoming elections. The development highlights the complex interplay between politics and diplomacy in Nigeria, where the interests of individuals and groups can often influence government actions.
