Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, known professionally as Simi, has earned her first international music certification with the song “Duduke.” The track has been certified Gold in New Zealand, signifying sales of 15,000 units and marking Simi’s inaugural foreign accolade.

Released in 2020, “Duduke” is a heartfelt expression of Simi’s anticipation and love for her unborn child. The music video features her baby bump, adding a personal touch to the release. To further engage fans, Simi launched the “Duduke Challenge,” encouraging listeners to create their own interpretations of the song.

In an interview, Simi revealed that some fans affectionately refer to her daughter, Adejare, as “Duduke” because of the song’s inspiration. While she does not find the nickname offensive, she prefers that her daughter be called by her given name.

The Gold certification in New Zealand underscores the global reach and appeal of African music and highlights the potential for Nigerian artists to gain international recognition. Simi now joins the ranks of renowned Nigerian musicians who have achieved success abroad. The song’s unique blend of African rhythms and heartfelt lyrics has resonated with listeners worldwide, and as Simi continues to produce and release music, her international fan base is likely to grow, paving the way for future collaborations and accolades. This milestone demonstrates the capacity of African artists to attain global recognition and success.
