Bayelsa Deputy Governor impeachment notice flawed says group

Bayelsa indigenes fault Dep Gov's impeachment process — Daily Nigerian

A group of Bayelsa indigenes, under the umbrella of Indigenes Without Borders Foundation, has expressed opposition to the impeachment notice served on the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Ewhrujakpo. The notice, which was served on October 15, 2025, accuses Ewhrujakpo of gross misconduct, including absconding from office and abandoning his official duties. However, the group claims that the mode of service was flawed, as it did not follow due process.

According to Patrick Michael, a member of the foundation’s board of trustees, the impeachment notice was served on Ewhrujakpo through a newspaper publication, rather than personally, as required by law. The group argues that the deputy governor is being victimized for his refusal to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) along with the state governor, Duoye Diri, and other lawmakers.

The impeachment notice, signed by 14 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, alleges that Ewhrujakpo’s conduct constitutes gross misconduct, warranting investigation and possible impeachment proceedings. However, a Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and other defendants to appear before it to show cause why they should not be stopped from impeaching the deputy governor.

Justice Emeka Nwite granted the order on October 27, while ruling on an ex-parte motion filed by Ewhrujakpo. The motion seeks to restrain the defendants from removing or impeaching the deputy governor, pending the hearing and determination of a motion on notice. The court adjourned the case until November 13 for the hearing of the motion on notice.

The development has sparked concerns about the political stability in Bayelsa State, with the Indigenes Without Borders Foundation vowing to resist any attempt to impeach the deputy governor. The group argues that Ewhrujakpo’s decision not to defect to the APC is a personal choice, and that he should not be penalized for it. The outcome of the court case is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape in Bayelsa State.
