The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, for suggesting that Nigerians should mobilize to defeat President Bola Tinubu in 2027. The party’s state spokesman, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, described Amaechi’s remark as “well-deserved contempt” and “political hallucination.”
Amaechi’s comment has been met with skepticism, given his own political standing. Oladejo pointed out that Amaechi, who was rejected in his home state of Rivers, is not in a position to lead a national movement against the president. “A politician who is disowned at home cannot lead a national revolt,” Oladejo said.
The APC spokesman questioned how Amaechi, who has been declared “politically non-grata,” intends to mobilize Nigerians. He noted that Amaechi has lost his political structure, followers, and influence in Rivers State, and is therefore not taken seriously by the electorate. “You cannot lead a national movement when your own backyard has padlocked the gate against you,” Oladejo said.
Amaechi’s statement has been seen as an attempt to remain relevant in national politics, despite his dwindling influence. The former minister’s presidential ambitions were thwarted when he lost the APC primaries, and he has since been trying to reassert his presence on the national stage.
The APC’s criticism of Amaechi reflects the ongoing power struggles within the party. The Lagos State Chapter’s response suggests that Amaechi’s comments will not be taken lightly, and that the party will not hesitate to speak out against what it sees as unfounded and unrealistic statements. As the 2027 elections approach, it remains to be seen how Amaechi’s remarks will be received by the wider Nigerian public and the political establishment.
