Seplat Energy PLC stresses that Nigeria must prioritize an affordable, reliable and accessible energy regime to build a prosperous nation. The company’s Chief Operating Officer, Samson Ezugworie, made this statement at the 43rd Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) Annual International Conference & Exhibition in Lagos. He highlighted the magnitude of Nigeria’s energy challenges: more than 70 million people lack electricity and 170 million rely on biomass for cooking, which harms both the environment and households. With the population projected to reach 237 million by 2025 and 400 million by 2050, urgent action is required.

Ezugworie argued that increasing oil production is essential to boost national revenues, narrow the current fiscal shortfall and drive GDP growth. He also underscored the importance of harnessing Nigeria’s vast gas reserves to expand domestic energy access, replace polluting imported generators and power basic industries. The global energy landscape is shifting as ownership and operation of Nigeria’s natural resources move from international giants to local operators. This transition creates new capital dynamics, requiring the industry to raise international finance while managing risks and protecting the environment. At the same time, it offers an opportunity for Nigeria to build an energy sector owned and managed by Nigerians, for Nigerians.

Seplat Energy has adopted three core principles—Leadership, Partnership and Stewardship—and is making tangible progress. The company has rehabilitated 26 wells, now producing 33,000 barrels per day, and is close to delivering its first gas from the ANOH Gas Processing Plant. It has also recently shipped its first cargoes of LPG from the upgraded Sapele Gas Plant. Seplat aims to end routine flaring in its onshore operations, reducing emissions and capturing gas for monetization. These initiatives demonstrate the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s prosperity and to transforming lives through energy.

As the country moves forward, prioritizing affordable, reliable and accessible energy is essential for growth and development. With the right strategies and partnerships, Nigeria can overcome its energy challenges and build a brighter future for its citizens.
