Bayelsa Governor Won’t Force Deputy to Join APC

Defection: I won’t compel my deputy to join APC – Gov Diri

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has announced that he will not compel his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, to join him in the All Progressives Congress (APC). This comes after Diri’s own defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on October 15 and subsequent formal joining of the APC on November 3.

At a State Executive Council meeting in Yenagoa, Diri expressed his commitment to engagement over confrontation, citing ongoing discussions with Ewhrudjakpo as a positive development. The deputy governor had previously sought a court injunction to prevent his impeachment by the state House of Assembly due to his refusal to join the APC. However, Diri revealed that the case filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja has been discontinued following their talks.

The governor emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation, urging the people of Bayelsa State to view politics as a means to promote development rather than sow division. He acknowledged the challenges of belonging to different parties but expressed hope that continued dialogue could lead to a resolution. Diri also called for an end to violence in the state, emphasizing that politics should serve the interests of the people rather than fuel conflict.

The development comes as Diri seeks to consolidate his position within the APC, while Ewhrudjakpo’s stance remains unchanged. The situation highlights the complexities of party politics in Nigeria, where defections and alliances can significantly impact the balance of power. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the relationship between Diri and Ewhrudjakpo will evolve and what implications this may have for the state’s political landscape.

In his address, Diri underscored the need for unity and cooperation, stating that he does not intend to force anyone to join the APC but rather to appeal to them to see reason with him. He acknowledged the challenges of being in different parties but expressed optimism that ongoing discussions could yield positive results. The governor’s commitment to dialogue and engagement is seen as a significant step towards resolving the impasse and promoting stability in the state.
