Ondo Speaker blames impeachment plot on lawmakers’ grievance with Governor Aiyedatiwa

The Ondo State House of Assembly is currently facing a leadership crisis as Speaker Olamide Oladiji confronts an impeachment attempt by a faction of lawmakers. Oladiji contends that the move is driven by grievances against Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa rather than any shortcomings in his own performance as Speaker. He describes the impeachment plot as a misplaced priority, insisting that the Assembly should concentrate on amending and passing the 2025 Appropriation Act.

The crisis began when 12 of the 26 lawmakers voted a no‑confidence motion against Oladiji, accusing him of gross misconduct and misappropriation of Assembly funds. In response, 14 lawmakers later expressed their support by passing a vote of confidence in his leadership. The split within the Assembly stems from a dispute over Governor Aiyedatiwa’s N531 billion supplementary budget, which some members argue is being rushed despite the poor performance of the 2025 budget and the limited time left in the fiscal year.

Oladiji has defended his position, emphasizing that the Assembly must prioritize its constitutional duties and avoid being sidetracked by political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general elections. He affirmed that the House will continue to operate in accordance with its rules and standing orders, warning that neglecting the amendment of the budget would cripple the state government. The Speaker also stressed that legislative tasks, such as considering supplementary budgets, should not be contingent on executive demands.

The leadership crisis in the Ondo State House of Assembly carries significant implications for the state’s governance and budgetary processes. As the Assembly navigates this turbulent period, observers will be keen to see how the dispute is resolved and what effect it will have on the state’s development. With the 2027 general elections looming, the Assembly’s ability to function effectively and make critical decisions will be closely monitored by stakeholders and citizens alike.
