The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) remains a strong force in Kano and is poised to expand its influence across the northern region ahead of the 2027 elections, according to its National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed. Despite recent defections, including the exit of two House of Representatives members, Abdulmumin Jibrin and Sagir Koki, who joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ahmed is confident that the party’s fortunes remain intact.
The defections, which were reportedly due to internal issues within the NNPP, have not weakened the party, Ahmed asserted. “I have just two words for them: good luck. Their exit is not a minus to NNPP. In fact, more people are joining the party every day, especially in Kano,” he said. The party’s strong foothold in Kano is expected to be a launching pad for its expansion into other major northern states, including Jigawa and Kaduna, in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
Ahmed revealed that the NNPP is open to forming alliances with other political groups to strengthen its chances in the upcoming elections. The party is also seeking to reclaim mandates it believes were lost due to irregularities, including in Taraba, where it claims to have won the last election. With its sights set on reclaiming more seats in 2027, the NNPP is gearing up for a strong showing in the northern region.
The recent defections are not isolated incidents, as several other members from Kano and Jigawa have also defected to the APC in recent months. However, Ahmed remains upbeat about the party’s prospects, citing the influx of new members and the party’s strong organization in Kano. As the 2027 elections approach, the NNPP’s strategy and alliances will be closely watched, particularly in the northern region, where the party is seeking to make significant inroads. With its focus on expansion and reclaiming lost mandates, the NNPP is poised to be a major player in the upcoming elections.
