The Imo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the dissolution of its state leadership, which was announced at the party’s recently concluded National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State. According to a press statement issued by the party’s spokesperson, Lancelot Obiaku, the convention was deemed illegal due to its disregard for a subsisting Federal High Court judgment delivered by Justice James Omotosho on October 31, 2025.
The court judgment had ordered the party to withhold the convention until it complied with its constitution. The Imo PDP has urged its members and supporters to disregard the report, describing it as a “wishful thought” with no basis in reality. The party stated that the national convention, which took place on November 15 and 16, was not a legitimate gathering, but rather a “mere gathering of a Committee of Friends for a tea party” that attempted to exercise authority without proper delegates from several states.
The party emphasized that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) refused to monitor or validate the convention, citing the court judgments as the reason. This decision, according to the Imo PDP, reinforces the fact that the actions taken at the convention are null and void. The party has expressed confidence in its current leadership, including Acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, and State Chairman Austin Nwachukwu.
The Imo PDP has reiterated its commitment to upholding discipline and constitutional order within the party, stating that it will only support actions that promote due process, internal democracy, and respect for the rule of law. The party’s rejection of the national convention’s outcome is seen as a significant development in the ongoing power struggle within the PDP. As the situation continues to unfold, the Imo PDP has called on its members to remain focused and unshaken, despite efforts to create confusion and distraction. The party’s stance is likely to have implications for the PDP’s national leadership and its preparations for future elections.
