Former Nigerian Senate Leader Ali Ndume has expressed concern over the recent surge in defections of opposition governors and federal lawmakers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that this trend could potentially destabilize the party. Speaking at the Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe Annual Award Lecture in Abuja, Ndume cautioned that many of these new members “have no value to add” and may push the party towards implosion.
Ndume’s comments come amidst a wave of high-profile defections to the APC, including the governors of Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Delta states. The Borno South Senator argued that these defectors often bring little commitment or contribution to the party, despite being immediately elevated to leadership positions in their states. He likened this phenomenon to a person switching denominations and instantly wanting to become a pastor, or someone converting to Islam and insisting on becoming an Imam, creating confusion in the political space.
Ndume also urged Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as it confronts national challenges. While acknowledging the President’s sincerity, he noted that many appointed officials “lack the capacity” required for their roles. He emphasized the need for unity behind the leader, stating that one person cannot single-handedly address all the challenges facing the country.
The Senator reiterated his past criticisms, asserting that the government is overloaded with incompetent and corrupt officials who must be removed for progress to be made. His comments were made at an event where Dame Uche Azikiwe, wife of Nigeria’s first president, commended the organizers for preserving the legacies of her late husband and urged current leaders to emulate the selflessness of First Republic statesmen.
The recent defections to the APC have significant implications for the country’s political landscape. As the party continues to grow in size, it faces the challenge of integrating new members and maintaining its cohesion. Ndume’s warnings highlight the need for the party to carefully manage its growth and ensure that new members are truly committed to its values and goals. With the country facing numerous challenges, the ability of the APC to effectively govern and address these issues will be closely watched by Nigerians and the international community.
