South Africa says charter flight carrying Palestinians is part of plan to empty Gaza

South Africa’s foreign minister, Ronald Lamola, has condemned a recent flight that arrived in Johannesburg with more than 150 Palestinians on board, suggesting it is part of a broader agenda to clear Gaza and the West Bank. Lamola described the circumstances surrounding the plane’s arrival as “suspicious” and called the incident a “clearly orchestrated operation” aimed at removing Palestinians from their homeland. While he did not directly accuse Israel, his comments imply that the campaign could be backed by the Israeli government, which has previously expressed support for plans to relocate Palestinians from Gaza—a notion echoed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who pledged to empty the region of its over two million residents.

The chartered aircraft landed at O.R. Tambo International Airport and was initially blocked from disembarking by immigration officials because the passengers lacked proper documentation. After being held on the tarmac for 12 hours, the 153 travelers—including families with children and a pregnant woman—were eventually granted entry. Rights groups have widely criticized the South African authorities for their handling of the situation, and President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered intelligence services to investigate who was behind the flight.

Lamola has stated that South Africa does not want to receive any further flights, warning that they may be part of a larger effort to “cleanse” Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank. The country has long supported Palestinian rights and consistently criticized Israel’s policies in the region; Ramaphosa has previously spoken out against Israel’s actions in Gaza. The incident underscores the ongoing tensions between Israel and Palestine and has prompted calls for a peaceful, diplomatic resolution to the conflict. As the investigation proceeds, concerns persist about the treatment of Palestinians and the possibility of additional attempts to relocate them from their homeland, drawing close scrutiny from the international community.
