Ben Obi, the Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) National Convention Organising Committee, affirmed that the party’s convention was properly constituted. He made the statement during an interview on Arise Television’s “Prime Time” programme, following a clash between rival factions at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
Obi explained that the outgoing National Working Committee (NWC) comprised 18 members, with Chairman Umar Damagum enjoying the support of 13 members, while four opposed him. He noted that the National Executive Committee (NEC) had notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the convention at its 102nd meeting on 25 August 2025, providing the required 21‑day notice. INEC acknowledged receipt of the notification, and both the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) were duly informed. Obi emphasized that these agencies participated in the convention, underscoring its legitimacy.
The PDP secretary’s remarks aim to clarify the situation and reassure stakeholders about the convention’s validity. Although the clash at the National Secretariat raised concerns about internal dynamics, Obi’s explanation highlights the committee’s efforts to ensure a smooth, legally compliant process. The involvement of INEC, the police, and the DSS demonstrates the party’s commitment to transparency and adherence to regulatory requirements.
As the PDP moves forward, confirming the convention’s legitimacy will have significant implications for internal politics and preparations for future elections. Managing internal conflicts and maintaining a united front will be crucial amid mounting political competition. With the convention’s validity established, the PDP can now focus on rebuilding and strengthening its structures, thereby enhancing its prospects in upcoming elections.
