Nigerian music industry sex demands hinder female artistes

Tiwa Savage, a prominent Nigerian singer, has highlighted the prevalence of sexual demands made towards female artistes in the music industry, in exchange for career opportunities. During a panel discussion at Entertainment Week Africa, Savage shared her personal experiences, revealing that she has been told to visit influential male executives in order to secure bookings for certain shows.

Savage also disclosed that she lost an endorsement deal after refusing to accompany the company’s co-owner on a holiday to Dubai. This experience led her to realize that some executives prioritize her physical appearance over her talent. She stated that her decision to showcase her body as part of her branding ultimately backfired, as it became the primary focus of these executives.

The Nigerian music industry has long been plagued by issues of sexism and exploitation, with many female artistes facing significant barriers to success. Savage’s testimony sheds light on the harsh realities that women in the industry often encounter, where their talent and abilities are overshadowed by demands for sexual favors.

Savage’s experiences are not isolated incidents, as numerous female artistes have spoken out about similar challenges they have faced in their careers. The issue of sexism and exploitation in the music industry is a complex one, with deep-rooted cultural and societal factors at play. However, by sharing their stories, women like Savage are helping to bring attention to these issues and spark important conversations about change.

The entertainment industry as a whole has a responsibility to promote a culture of respect and equality, where talent and hard work are the primary factors in determining success. As the industry continues to evolve, it is essential that stakeholders work together to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all artistes, regardless of their gender or background. By doing so, the industry can ensure that talented individuals like Savage are able to thrive and reach their full potential, without facing unnecessary obstacles or exploitation.
