Kano APC warns Housing minister, Yusuf Ata, against promoting Sen. Barau's guber bid — Daily Nigerian

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano has warned Minister of State for Housing Yusuf Ata against publicly endorsing the governorship ambitions of Senate Deputy President Barau Jibrin. Ata’s recent remarks, in which he urged support for Jibrin’s bid—including from 2023 governorship candidate Nasiru Gawuna—were deemed inappropriate by the party.

In a statement issued by Abdullahi Abbas, chairman of the Kano APC chapter, the party expressed concern that Ata’s comments could create misunderstandings and sow disunity among members. The statement emphasized that matters of internal party affairs are the prerogative of the APC leadership and its designated spokespersons. While acknowledging Ata’s right to support any aspirant of his choice, the party reminded him of his responsibilities as a minister and member of the Federal Executive Council to promote unity within the party.

The Kano APC chapter cautioned that Ata’s public statements might be misconstrued as official party positions because of his status. It noted a pattern of uncomplimentary public pronouncements from Ata and warned him to refrain from similar remarks in the future, indicating that failure to comply could result in disciplinary action.

The episode highlights the complexities of party politics in Nigeria, where alliances and endorsements can significantly influence electoral outcomes. As one of the nation’s major parties, the APC is gearing up for upcoming elections, including the 2027 governorship race in Kano. The Kano chapter’s warning underscores the importance of maintaining party discipline and unity as aspirants vie for positions. Political observers are likely to watch this development closely, since the APC’s internal dynamics and alliances will have considerable implications for its electoral prospects. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the party’s ability to manage internal conflicts and present a united front will be crucial to its success.
