No Niger delta indigene should be poor - SDP's Adebayo

Prince Adewole Adebayo, a former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, asserted that the Niger Delta region possesses the potential to drive national development and surpass the economic capacities of several developed nations. He made this statement during the public presentation of a new book, *Hidden Treasures: An Exposition on the Rich Resources and Opportunities of the Niger Delta*, authored by Chris Iyovwaye, in Abuja on Friday. Adebayo described the Niger Delta as one of Nigeria’s richest yet most underutilized regions, hindered by decades of leadership shortcomings. He emphasized that the region’s prosperity can only be unlocked through deliberate effort, highlighting the need for individual initiative, community involvement, and government intervention. Given the area’s abundant natural and human resources, he argued that it is unacceptable for any indigene to live in poverty.

The book presentation, chaired by Maj.-Gen. Ike Nwachukwu, also featured discussions on the need for restructuring and the importance of supporting the Armed Forces in maintaining peace and security nationwide. Human‑rights lawyer Prof. Mike Ozekhome, represented by Prof. Ezekiel Abalagba, praised the book as a practical roadmap for revitalizing key sectors in the Niger Delta, stressing the need for transparent leadership, improved infrastructure, and economic diversification. Former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by his Chief of Staff Dr. Mike Ogiadome, reaffirmed the Niger Delta’s role as Nigeria’s economic engine, emphasizing the need for long‑term investment, including the establishment of a deep‑sea port to attract global investors.

Author Chris Iyovwaye stated that the book aims to correct long‑standing misconceptions by providing clear insights into the region’s wealth, challenges, and pathways to sustainable progress. The Niger Delta is endowed with vast oil and gas reserves, as well as significant agricultural and fisheries potential. Despite this wealth, the region has struggled with poverty, environmental degradation, and insecurity. The publication of the book and the discussions at the event underscore the need for a new approach to unlock the region’s potential and drive national development. With its rich resources and human capital, the Niger Delta can play a crucial role in Nigeria’s economic growth and prosperity, making efforts to revitalize the region essential for the country’s future.
