Senator Orji Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, has linked the recent surge in violent attacks and abductions across Nigeria to political motives. He claims that the bandits behind these assaults are being sponsored by politicians who seek to destabilise President Bola Tinubu’s administration—a pattern he says mirrors the tactics used during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure to pressure the government. Kalu also suggested that some members of the international community and local actors are orchestrating the violence, though he did not name any alleged sponsors.
According to Kalu, such unrest is a routine phenomenon during election periods, when various groups attempt to exert pressure on the government. He praised President Tinubu’s response, noting that the president’s decision to cancel all engagements and focus on security challenges demonstrates his commitment to addressing the crisis. Kalu expressed confidence that the abducted individuals, including schoolgirls, will be rescued and that the government is making every effort to ensure their safe return.
The senator further attributed the recent spike in attacks to comments made by former U.S. President Donald Trump about killings in Nigeria. He believes the intelligence community is aware of the individuals behind the violence, who are allegedly backed by politicians, and warned that the federal government will take action against them to stabilise the country.
Security concerns have intensified, with multiple attacks resulting in deaths and the abduction of over 300 people, including schoolchildren. In response, the government has withdrawn police officers assigned to very important persons (VIPs) and redeployed them to the most affected areas—a move Kalu commended as a step in the right direction. He stressed that international cooperation, particularly with the United States, is crucial for combating insecurity and called for a strong partnership between Nigeria and the U.S. to effectively tackle the issue.
As the situation unfolds, the government’s priority remains the rescue of abducted individuals and the restoration of peace to the affected regions.
