APC Forms Elders Council to Unify Party Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Adamawa Progressive Elders Council (APEC), a newly established advisory body within the All Progressives Congress (APC), has outlined plans to unify the party by resolving internal disputes. The initiative aims to strengthen the party’s position ahead of the 2027 general elections and prevent the kind of internal conflicts that hindered the party’s performance in 2019 and 2023.

According to Ahmed Sajoh, the council’s spokesman, the establishment of APEC followed consultations with senior APC figures at the national level to stabilize the party at the state level. The council, which comprises former governors, senators, ministers, and respected community elders, will serve as a stabilizing force for the party in Adamawa State. Sajoh, who previously served as the commissioner of information under an APC government, noted that the party’s experiences in the 2019 and 2023 election cycles were marked by internal disarray, resulting in the loss of the governorship election due to intraparty conflicts.

The absence of a strong conflict-resolution mechanism led to fragmentation after primary elections in those years, ultimately costing the party key positions. To prevent a repetition of such setbacks, the council has adopted a 12-point resolution, including commitments to produce credible candidates through transparent processes, guarantee free and fair congresses, and promptly resolve disputes arising from primaries. The council also pledged to build effective grassroots campaign structures to strengthen the party’s electoral outreach.

The establishment of APEC is a significant development for the APC in Adamawa State, as it seeks to address the internal conflicts that have hindered the party’s progress in recent years. By providing a platform for party elders to resolve disputes and promote unity, APEC aims to boost the party’s chances of success in the 2027 general elections. With the council’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and effective campaign structures, the APC may be able to regain its footing in the state and make a stronger showing in the upcoming elections.
