The Nigerian government has issued a stern warning to unauthorized gas retailers, threatening to take action against them after a recent gas explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State, claimed three lives. The incident occurred on Friday night at a retail outlet in the Biodun Alaadun area, where a tanker was discharging gas.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized that the government will no longer tolerate illegal gas retail operations. Preliminary reports indicate the explosion was caused by a gas tanker off‑loading LPG into an illegal 2.5‑metre‑tall skid situated in a densely populated neighbourhood. While cooking with gas is generally safe, the minister warned that substandard equipment, negligence and the failure to obtain necessary operating licences can lead to catastrophic explosions.
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has launched a full investigation into the incident. Ekpo urged residents and eyewitnesses to cooperate with investigators to establish the exact cause of the blast. He warned that the government will shut down unsafe sites, prosecute offenders and enforce all safety regulations to protect lives and property.
The incident underscores the need for stricter regulations and enforcement in the gas sector. The government’s warning to illegal gas operators is a step toward ensuring public safety and restoring confidence in the industry.
