AI slop is taking over the internet. Here's how we got here.

The proliferation of low‑quality content generated by artificial intelligence (AI) has become a pressing concern on social media platforms. This phenomenon, often called “AI slop,” includes videos, images, audio, and text created with little regard for accuracy or quality. Technologist Adam Nemeroff of Quinnipiac University describes AI slop as “low‑to‑mid‑quality content created with AI tools, often with little regard for accuracy.”

Research by the SEO firm Graphite found that 52 percent of articles online are generated by AI, indicating that AI‑generated material extends beyond articles to social media posts and advertisements. Ethan Smith, CEO of Graphite, notes that the ease of generating text with AI tools makes it likely that a significant portion of tweets and other online content are AI‑generated.

The prevalence of AI slop on social media has significant implications for the online experience. Internet‑culture researcher Aidan Walker suggests that the sheer volume of low‑quality content degrades online spaces, making it difficult for users to find high‑quality material. Walker attributes the spread of AI slop to the ease of creation and the potential for financial gain, rather than a genuine effort to produce meaningful content. While not all AI‑generated content is poor, most AI slop is designed to grab attention rather than provide value, forcing users to wade through large amounts of low‑quality material to find something worthwhile.

In response to growing concerns, some platforms are exploring ways to identify and filter AI‑generated content. TikTok, for example, has announced plans to help users spot AI‑generated material on its platform. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains uncertain, and AI slop is likely to continue posing a major challenge for social media platforms in the coming years.
