Honourable Musa Adar has officially assumed office as the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI). In his inaugural address to management and staff, he outlined a vision to enhance the organisation’s visibility, institutional relevance, and impact. Drawing on extensive legislative and oversight experience, Adar aims to strengthen NEITI’s position as a beacon of openness in Nigeria’s extractive industries.

NEITI has built a reputation for shaping policies, influencing reforms, and promoting public trust through its reports. However, Adar noted that the organisation faces significant challenges, particularly with Nigeria’s upcoming validation as a member of the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) scheduled for July 2026. To address these challenges, he identified amending the NEITI Act 2007 as a key priority, explaining that the current Act does not provide NEITI with the necessary institutional authority and capacity to function optimally.

Adar’s experience in the National Assembly, including his role as Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Upstream, has given him a deep understanding of NEITI’s mandate and operations. He pledged to ensure that NEITI continues to publish accurate and credible reports while strengthening mechanisms to prevent extractive revenues from being lost to inefficiency or corruption. Additionally, he plans to develop strategies that support the government in optimising Nigeria’s mineral resources, thereby promoting sustainable economic growth.

To achieve these objectives, Adar committed to investing in staff capacity and fostering stronger collaboration with government, civil society, the media, industry stakeholders, and development partners. He emphasized the importance of empowering NEITI with stronger legal tools to enforce compliance and drive transparency and accountability across the extractive sector. With his experience and vision, Adar is poised to lead NEITI in its efforts to promote transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s extractive industries.
