The Women in Energy Network (WIEN) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM), marking five years of significant impact and a growing role in promoting a more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable energy sector in Nigeria and beyond. WIEN President Eyono Fatai Williams addressed members, partners, and industry stakeholders, highlighting the network’s evolution into a powerful movement advocating for equity, leadership, and innovation.

Founded to create space for women across the energy value chain, WIEN now boasts 1,108 members, with four new corporate members joining in 2025. This growth reflects the network’s rising credibility and relevance in a rapidly transforming industry. A key focus of WIEN’s mission this year was inclusion, advancing girls’ and women’s participation in STEM through grassroots International Women’s Day (IWD) career fairs and national and global IWD events. These programs connected young girls and professional women with mentors, insights, and opportunities, helping build a future workforce that mirrors the sector’s needed diversity.

WIEN also expanded its industry footprint by actively participating in key energy conferences, exhibitions, and policy dialogues across Nigeria, Africa, and Europe. The network championed gender inclusion, highlighted the importance of diverse leadership, and pushed for sustainable energy solutions, ensuring women’s voices are part of national and continental policy conversations.

Innovation and capacity building remained central to WIEN’s work. Masterclasses and webinars on AI, cybersecurity, financial management, investment, and regulatory compliance equipped members with the skills to thrive in a rapidly changing sector. The Collegiate Community advanced the Girls in STEM agenda through mentorship, research initiatives, and digital‑skills training.

Advocacy was strengthened through a high‑level visit to the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, resulting in a database of women‑owned businesses and qualified female leaders. A new partnership with eTranzact International Plc will provide cost‑easing digital solutions to women‑led enterprises, boosting their competitiveness in Nigeria’s growing technology‑driven economy. WIEN’s efforts were recognized with two Industry Advocate Awards, affirming its increasing influence and commitment to positive change within the sector.

The AGM closed with renewed commitment from members to advance WIEN’s mission and solidify its role as a key driver of transformation in the energy industry. Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Cecilia Aqua‑Umoren, noted that 2024 was marked by growth, strategic engagement, and rising visibility for the organization across Nigeria’s energy sector. She assured continued progress and solid commitment from the Board, emphasizing that WIEN has strengthened its programs, expanded partnerships, and advanced advocacy aimed at improving gender diversity and inclusion.

The meeting set a positive tone for the year ahead, with the election of new executive members led by Eyono Fatai‑Williams, who was re‑elected after an initial term in office. As WIEN looks forward to building on the progress already made, the network remains committed to driving inclusion, sparking innovation, and championing sustainability across the energy landscape.
