Labour Party Reaffirms National Officers Amid Controversy

Abure's Labour Party ratifies 2024 congresses, fills vacancies

The Labour Party’s National Executive Council, led by Julius Abure, has reaffirmed the national officers elected during the party’s 2024 national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State. This decision was made during a meeting held at the party’s national secretariat in Utako, Abuja, on Friday.

The meeting, attended by members of the National Working Committee, state chairmen and secretaries, stakeholders, and officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission, reviewed the controversies surrounding the 2024 national convention and ongoing litigations. A statement jointly signed by Abure and the factional National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, confirmed the development.

According to the statement, the reaffirmed national officers include the national treasurer, publicity secretary, legal adviser, financial secretary, organising secretary, women leader, and youth leader. The council also empowered the national chairman and national secretary to convene a special convention when necessary. Furthermore, plans to conduct ward, local government, and state congresses across the federation were ratified.

The Labour Party’s 2024 national convention had been marred by controversy, prompting the need for the National Executive Council to review the situation and take a stance. The council’s decision to reaffirm the elected national officers aims to bring stability to the party ahead of future elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission’s position on the exercise was also considered during the meeting. The commission’s input is crucial in ensuring that the party’s activities align with electoral regulations. By addressing the controversies and reaffirming the national officers, the Labour Party is taking steps to strengthen its internal structures and prepare for upcoming electoral challenges.

The decision to conduct ward, local government, and state congresses is also significant, as it will enable the party to reorganize its grassroots structures and build a stronger foundation for future elections. With the national officers reaffirmed and plans in place for congresses, the Labour Party is moving forward with its internal reorganization, aiming to emerge stronger and more united.
