A security expert has urged the Nigerian government to conduct the recruitment of additional military and police personnel without political interference. Dr. Lekan Jackson Ojo, a certified security specialist, made this statement in response to President Bola Tinubu’s directive to hire more staff to address the country’s security challenges.
The President’s declaration of a nationwide security emergency and his approval for extra recruitment into the Armed Forces and Police have been welcomed by Dr. Ojo, who noted that the move is long overdue. However, he emphasized that implementation must be careful to ensure only qualified, capable and patriotic citizens are engaged. Dr. Ojo warned that the usual practice of influencing appointments within security agencies could undermine the recruitment process, and he stressed that priority should be given to applicants who are genuinely committed to serving the nation.
The expert also advised the President to closely monitor the implementation of the recruitment of 20,000 police officers to prevent politicization. He suggested establishing a system to receive feedback on the process, ensuring that the President’s directives are carried out as intended. Dr. Ojo further emphasized the need for discretion when discussing security matters, noting that those responsible for the country’s security challenges are likely well‑informed about government plans.
The recruitment of additional military and police personnel is part of the government’s effort to tackle Nigeria’s security concerns, a major issue for citizens in recent times. The success of this initiative will depend on the government’s ability to implement it effectively and resist any attempts to politicize the process. As the country moves forward, it is essential that the recruitment be transparent, fair and merit‑based to achieve the desired outcomes.
