Nigerian students urged to use social media responsibly

Niger Gov Bago decry lack of responsible use of social media

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has expressed concern over the growing trend of Nigerian students using social media to disseminate negative information about the country. During a visit by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) executives, led by President Olushola Oladoja, at the Government House in Minna, Bago appealed to the association to promote patriotism and responsible social media usage among students.

The governor emphasized the need for students to use social media platforms to foster a sense of nationalism and love for Nigeria. He encouraged the student body to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initiatives, particularly in the area of food security, by establishing student farms. This, he believes, will not only promote self-sufficiency but also contribute to the country’s overall food security.

In response, NANS President Oladoja assured that the association will embark on a sensitization campaign to promote dialogue and effective communication among students. The campaign aims to educate students on the importance of resolving issues through constructive dialogue rather than resorting to negative social media posts. Oladoja commended President Tinubu’s initiatives, including the introduction of zero-interest student loans, and thanked Governor Bago for his support through scholarships and youth appointments.

The meeting highlights the growing concern among Nigerian leaders about the impact of social media on the country’s image and the need for responsible social media usage. As the student population is a significant segment of social media users, the association’s efforts to promote patriotism and constructive dialogue are seen as crucial in shaping the online narrative about Nigeria. By supporting government initiatives and promoting responsible social media usage, the student body can play a vital role in fostering a positive image of the country and contributing to its development.
