The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Dr. Tony Nwoye, the Labour Party’s senatorial candidate for Anambra North, the winner of last Saturday’s election. The results were announced late on Friday after resolving initial issues in the Ogbaru wards.

Prof. Kingsley Ubaorji, INEC Returning Officer for Anambra North and a professor at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, made the declaration at the Onitsha North Local Government Headquarters. According to the official tally, Nwoye received 94,779 votes, defeating the incumbent Senator Stella Oduah of the Peoples Democratic Party, who garnered 50,146 votes. Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano, representing the All Progressives Grand Alliance and wife of the state’s former governor, placed third with 48,212 votes.

Ubaorji confirmed that Nwoye satisfied the constitutional requirement for a valid number of votes cast and therefore returned him as the elected senator. In his brief remarks, Nwoye thanked the people of Anambra North for their support and pledged not to disappoint his constituents.
