The African Democratic Congress (ADC) faction led by Nafiu Bala Gombe has denounced the suspension of Leke Abijide, the lawmaker representing Yagba Federal Constituency, from the party. The Gombe faction describes the move as an “illegitimate and desperate attempt” by the rival faction, headed by former Senate President David Mark, to assert control.
According to reports, the David Mark‑led faction confirmed Abijide’s expulsion in a statement signed by national publicity secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, citing a decision made by the Kogi State executive committee. The National Working Committee (NWC) chaired by Mark ratified this decision after a meeting at the ADC national headquarters in Abuja. However, the Gombe‑led faction argues that the action contravenes the party’s laws.
In a statement signed by the faction’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Dr. Christopher O. Okechukwu, the party expressed concern over the actions of certain individuals who are allegedly not genuinely committed to the party’s growth and development. The statement emphasized that the David Mark‑led NWC lacks the authority to sanction or punish a bona fide member, let alone an elected federal lawmaker.
The ADC faction reiterated its opposition to these actions, reaffirming its dedication to upholding the party’s integrity and democratic processes. Abijide has maintained that the party belongs to the Gombe‑led faction and must be restored to its legitimate leadership structure.
The development highlights an ongoing power struggle within the ADC, with both factions vying for control. Internal conflicts have sparked concerns about the party’s stability and its ability to effectively represent constituents. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the party will navigate these challenges. The ADC’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law will be crucial in resolving the crisis and maintaining the trust of its members and the public.
