Abia State Governor Alex Otti has announced that 27,980 individuals have applied for the ongoing second batch of teachers’ recruitment in the state, surpassing the 4,000 positions available. The governor made this disclosure during his monthly chat with journalists at Government House Umuahia, emphasizing that the recruitment process will be transparent and merit-based.
Governor Otti assured applicants that the selection process will not be influenced by personal connections or favoritism, stating that “if you qualify, you will be employed.” He emphasized that only qualifications will determine the successful candidates, ensuring a fair and equitable process.
Regarding the first batch of teachers’ recruitment, Governor Otti announced that efforts are being made to resolve a payment glitch, with the aim of settling the outstanding payments by the end of the weekend. This move is expected to bring relief to the affected teachers.
In addition, the governor revealed plans to gradually clear the backlog of unpaid gratuities in the state, which dates back approximately 20 years. His administration has received a report from a committee set up to review the matter, paving the way for a phased offset of the outstanding payments.
The large number of applications for the teaching positions underscores the demand for employment opportunities in the education sector. Governor Otti’s commitment to a transparent recruitment process and his efforts to address the payment issues and gratuities backlog are significant steps towards improving the welfare of teachers and the overall education system in Abia State. As the recruitment process progresses, the state government’s ability to deliver on its promises will be closely watched, with potential implications for the education sector and the state’s economy.
