Obi Remains a Labour Party Member, Says Datti Baba-Ahmed

The Labour Party has dispelled rumors that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has left the party. Former vice‑presidential candidate Datti Baba‑Ahmed clarified the matter after the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, which was attended by officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to Baba‑Ahmed, Obi remains a Labour Party member, and his absence from the meeting does not indicate a departure.

The NEC meeting, chaired by the party’s National Chairman Julius Abure, marked a significant step toward reconciling internal conflicts that intensified after the 2024 national convention in Nnewi. The convention split the party into rival camps, with top figures such as Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti supporting different factions. Baba‑Ahmed emphasized that the party has emerged stronger from these troubles and is now focused on moving forward.

Baba‑Ahmed highlighted the presence of INEC officials at the meeting as a major boost, validating the party’s commitment to lawful conduct and reinforcing its legitimacy. He affirmed the Labour Party’s dedication to reconciliation and its openness to welcoming both new and existing members. The party’s core priority remains workers’ welfare, with a focus on securing decent, realistic living wages—a stance consistent with its founding principles and set to guide its agenda through 2027 and beyond.

The NEC meeting occurs against a backdrop of rising insecurity in Nigeria, including recent school abductions and the killings of senior army officers. Baba‑Ahmed recalled that the Labour Party had warned of such outcomes if the country failed to elect appropriate leadership. He reiterated the party’s commitment to addressing these national challenges and its readiness to make a positive impact in the future. With internal conflicts now being addressed, the Labour Party is concentrating on promoting workers’ welfare and contributing to the country’s development.
