The Osun Masterminds, a civic group, has urged political stakeholders in Osun State to maintain decorum and civility ahead of the 2026 governorship election. In its November State of the State address, the group emphasized the importance of issue-based campaigns and respect for electoral laws to ensure a credible democratic process.
According to Prof. Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, Executive Director of the Osun Masterminds, the increasing number of aspirants, particularly within the All Progressives Congress, necessitates a call for restraint to prevent internal conflicts. “We urge aspirants and their supporters to prioritize party unity, maintain civility, and engage in issue-based campaigns,” he said.
The group noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission and several political leaders have repeatedly stressed the need for adherence to electoral laws to safeguard stability before, during, and after the polls. Prof. Oyedokun-Alli appealed to political actors to abide by this call and preserve the unity of the state, emphasizing that unity is essential for grassroots mobilization and reconciliation.
The Osun Masterminds also expressed concern that governance in the state has taken a backseat to political maneuvering ahead of the 2026 election, leaving key responsibilities unattended. The group criticized the state government for neglecting its duties, citing stalled recruitment of teachers and health workers, haphazard road construction, and leadership issues in the Amotekun Corps.
Additionally, the group condemned the prolonged delay in recruitment exercises, which has left schools and health facilities understaffed. It also lamented the lack of clear timelines for road construction projects, which has frustrated residents. The group warned that the continued closure of local government secretariats has crippled key statutory functions such as healthcare, agriculture, and revenue generation.
The Osun Masterminds’ call for decorum and civility comes as the state prepares for a crucial election. With multiple aspirants vying for office, the group’s emphasis on issue-based campaigns and respect for electoral laws is seen as essential for maintaining stability and ensuring a credible democratic process. As the election approaches, the group’s concerns about governance and the need for political actors to prioritize the state’s interests will likely remain a key focus of attention.
