Hospital & Institute Sign MoU on Vaccine Development in Nige

The Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH) in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has partnered with the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) to advance vaccine research and development. Formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding, the collaboration aims to boost vaccine research and meet the health needs of Nasarawa State and beyond.

The signing ceremony was chaired by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, and attended by Dr. Hassan Ikrama, Chief Medical Director of FUTH Lafia, and Dr. Obi Adigwe, Director General of NIPRD. The agreement leverages NIPRD’s expertise as a centre of excellence in pharmaceutical research and FUTH Lafia’s capacity to provide study participants and laboratory services for research trials.

Minister Pate highlighted that the partnership will focus on developing vaccines and drugs to protect the population and treat Lassa Fever patients. He noted that the collaboration is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system, which is currently gaining momentum from international partnerships, technological innovations, and private‑sector support.

Dr. Adigwe expressed gratitude for the minister’s backing and praised the commitment of FUTH Lafia’s Chief Medical Director to the initiative’s success. In response, Dr. Ikrama commended the Federal Government’s dedication to the health sector, especially in vaccines and research innovation.

The partnership represents a significant step toward addressing Nigeria’s health challenges, including the threat of Lassa Fever. The hospital has pledged to continue investing in research to combat dangerous diseases that endanger human life. With this collaboration, Nigeria is poised to make substantial progress in vaccine research and development, thereby strengthening its healthcare system and improving the well‑being of its citizens.
