The Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service recorded a notable revenue increase of 10.1% between January and October 2025, generating N93.9 billion compared with N85.3 billion in the same period of 2024. A major contributor to this growth was the Kano Free Trade Zone, whose revenue surged from N2.6 billion in 2024 to N17.7 billion in 2025—a rise of 582.93%—thanks to stronger oversight and improved trader compliance.

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State praised the command’s achievement, commending Area Controller Dalhatu Abubakar‑Zurmi for his leadership and innovative approach. Represented by the Commissioner for Commerce, Industries and Investment, Shehu Wada‑Sagagi, the governor highlighted that the command’s recognition as the most improved revenue command at the 2025 Comptroller‑General of Customs Conference reflects its hard work and dedication.

Beyond revenue gains, the command has made significant strides in intercepting illicit drugs that threaten families across the state. Governor Yusuf urged Mr. Abubakar‑Zurmi to document these accomplishments as a reference for future customs officers, emphasizing the importance of his leadership in setting a benchmark for reforms and modern customs operations.

In his remarks, Mr. Abubakar‑Zurmi thanked the Comptroller‑General of Customs for entrusting him with the command’s leadership. He attributed the success to stakeholder cooperation, which turned initial resistance into trust, and praised his officers as capable of leading any formation in the service. He reaffirmed the command’s zero‑tolerance stance against smuggling, noting that its transformation has been described by stakeholders as unprecedented in the area command’s history.

The Kano/Jigawa Area Command’s success serves as a model for other customs commands, demonstrating how effective leadership, innovation, and collaboration can drive revenue growth and combat illicit activities. As the command builds on these achievements, its efforts are expected to significantly strengthen the country’s trade and security environment.
