Nigerian social critic Martins Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkman or VDM, has offered a solution to the country’s security challenges, particularly terrorism. In a recent video posted on his Facebook page, VDM blamed the worsening crisis on a lack of education, especially in the northern region. He argued that most individuals involved in terrorism in Nigeria come from the North and suggested that education could be a key factor in reducing terrorist activities.

VDM contended that if a Nigerian leader devoted a significant portion of their tenure to educating the northern population, it could potentially solve the terrorism problem. He emphasized that knowledge is power and that the educated few are currently exploiting the uneducated as weapons. According to VDM, many young people in the North do not attend school, focusing instead on religious studies, which can make them vulnerable to manipulation.

The critic pointed out that the North has a large number of idle youths who beg on the streets, making them easy targets for recruitment into terrorist activities. He cited cities such as Maiduguri and Zamfara as examples where many young people are unemployed and uneducated, rendering them susceptible to exploitation.

Terrorism has long been a concern in Nigeria, with groups like Boko Haram perpetrating attacks and destabilizing the region. The lack of education and economic opportunities in the North has been identified as a contributing factor to the crisis. VDM’s suggestion highlights the need for a multi‑faceted approach that includes education and economic development to address the root causes of terrorism.

The Nigerian government has implemented various initiatives to tackle security challenges, including military operations and rehabilitation programs for former terrorists. However, the problem persists, and alternative solutions such as VDM’s proposal are being considered. As the country continues to grapple with terrorism, the role of education and economic development in preventing radicalization is likely to remain a central topic of discussion.
