The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology has suspended its four-month industrial action. This decision was made during an emergency congress meeting held on Monday, according to a press statement released on Wednesday. The statement, signed by Interim Chairman Prof. Michael Olamoyegun and Interim Secretary Dr. Ayobami Alabi, announced that academic activities resumed on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
The lecturers had been on strike since July 31, protesting the delayed implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure. The association stated that only the basic salary component of CONMESS had been paid, while associated allowances and arrears from January 2025 remain outstanding. The proposed implementation, initially set for July 2026, was rejected by the association as it fell nearly 19 months after negotiations began.
The emergency congress reviewed the progress made on the demand for full CONMESS implementation and noted that the unresolved components, including allowances and arrears, form the core of their continued negotiation with the university management. After deliberation, the congress unanimously resolved to suspend the industrial action, allowing for further constructive engagement with the university management to secure the full CONMESS package.
A framework for periodic review of progress on CONMESS implementation was also approved. The association stated that future actions, including the possibility of escalation, would depend on the university management’s actions or inactions. The resolution was made in good faith, recognizing appeals from the public and stakeholders, and in trust that the university management would expedite the payment of outstanding allowances and arrears.
The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics expressed appreciation to its members for their support and resilience throughout the industrial action, noting that their commitment upheld the dignity of the profession. The association’s decision to suspend the strike aims to prevent further strain on the medical program and demonstrates their trust in the ongoing efforts of the Governing Council and the Commissioner for Education in Oyo State. With academic activities resuming, the focus now shifts to the university management’s response to the association’s demands, which will determine the next steps in this ongoing dispute.
