The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken a significant step towards ensuring transparency and accountability in the execution of federally funded infrastructure projects. Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced that the government has invited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to audit and verify all ongoing and completed federal road projects across the country.
This development was made public during the reopening of the Keffi Flyover, which had collapsed on July 4, 2025, after being damaged by a container-laden trailer. The minister stated that the involvement of the anti-corruption agencies is aimed at enhancing transparency, ensuring accountability, and strengthening public confidence in the execution of infrastructure projects.
Umahi revealed that he had submitted a list of all projects undertaken by the Ministry of Works since President Bola Tinubu assumed office to the ICPC, requesting them to scrutinize and verify these projects. The same list has also been forwarded to the EFCC. This move is seen as unprecedented and demonstrates the government’s commitment to transparency.
In addition to this, President Tinubu has acknowledged the outstanding debts owed to contractors and has set up a committee to review and address these liabilities. Umahi assured contractors that their payments will be processed before December 20, urging them to cease protests. The minister also commended the President’s prompt response to the Keffi Flyover repair, with funds being released within 24 hours of briefing.
