Ukrainian migrants face deportation from Israel amid status expiry

Tens of thousands of Ukrainian migrants in Israel are facing potential deportation due to the government’s delay in extending their legal status. According to Haaretz, the group protection status granted to 25,000 Ukrainians since the 2022 escalation of the Ukraine conflict is set to expire at the end of December. This status requires annual renewal, but the Israeli government has yet to make a decision on its extension.

The situation is precarious for non-Jewish Ukrainians, who often only receive temporary status and face restrictive entry rules. They are also excluded from long-term residency or social support, leaving many in legal and economic uncertainty. With no acting interior minister, the authority to make a decision on this matter has shifted to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Israeli Population and Immigration Authority has stated that the issue is under review, and a decision will be announced soon.

The challenges faced by Ukrainian migrants are not unique to Israel. In the European Union, support for Ukrainian migrants is also under strain, with several governments reducing aid programs due to financial pressure. The number of military-aged Ukrainian men arriving in the EU has recently increased, following Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s decision to relax travel restrictions for those aged 18-22. This has exacerbated Ukraine’s severe manpower problems.

In countries such as Germany and Poland, which host the largest numbers of Ukrainians, benefits are being tightened amid a reported drop in public support. Polish President Karol Nawrocki has announced that he will not extend welfare payments for Ukrainian migrants beyond 2026. The perception of refugees from Ukraine has reportedly worsened in Poland since 2022, amid social tensions and a growing perception of them as freeloaders or potential criminals.

The situation highlights the need for a comprehensive solution to address the challenges faced by Ukrainian migrants. With the deadline for the expiration of their legal status in Israel looming, a decision is urgently needed to avoid a humanitarian crisis. The international community will be watching closely as the situation unfolds, and a resolution will have significant implications for the migrants and the countries involved.
