The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clarified that members expelled during its National Convention can no longer be considered a faction and are not authorized to expel other party members. Umar Sani, a party chieftain, made this statement during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, emphasizing that the expulsions were carried out through a formal process.
According to Sani, a motion was moved, seconded, and passed at the convention, resulting in the expulsion of certain members. He noted that the party did not expel anyone in secret, and the outcome of the convention is final since no court has declared it illegal. Sani explained that an expelled member has no right to claim they have expelled other people, as they are no longer recognized as a faction within the party.
The PDP stalwart provided context, stating that the National Working Committee (NWC) of Umar Damagum was dissolved through a motion proposed by the Governor of Plateau State at the convention. Following the dissolution, the Kabiru Turaki-led NWC was sworn in and began work immediately. This development has brought clarity to the party’s structure and leadership.
The clarification comes as the party navigates its internal dynamics and prepares for future elections. The PDP, one of Nigeria’s major political parties, has been working to strengthen its organization and address internal conflicts. The expulsion of certain members and the subsequent clarification on their status aim to promote unity and stability within the party.
The party’s leadership has emphasized the importance of following established procedures and respecting the decisions made at the National Convention. By doing so, the PDP seeks to demonstrate its commitment to democratic principles and adherence to its constitution. As the party moves forward, it is likely to focus on rebuilding and consolidating its base, with the goal of presenting a strong challenge in upcoming elections.
